As winter approaches and the weather becomes less favourable, rats and mice move indoors to seek both shelter and food. They actively forage for food at night so are rarely seen during daylight hours, however telltale signs such as droppings, gnawed food or other objects, and scurrying noises in the roof give away their presence.

The three most common rodents in Australia are the Norway Rat, the Roof Rat and the House Mouse.

There are many rat and mouse treatments available today. Chemical methods include baits and rat drinks while non-chemical methods include traps and glue boards along with identifying and proofing entry points.

You can help to reduce rodent infestations by:

• Proofing (sealing) known entry points

• Removing all possible food and water sources

• Cleaning up around waste areas

• Storing food in glass or metal containers
