Thermal imaging termite detection Pestec is one of the few companies in Sydney that offers inspections using thermal imaging technology to accurately detect termite activity behind walls and other surfaces which may have otherwise remained undetected during a normal visual termite inspection. Thermal imaging detects differentials in heat energy. The thermal camera creates an image based on thermal energy rather than light - the resulting image sort of looks like an x-ray with warmer areas appearing different than cooler areas. Because termites require a warm, humid environment in which to work, a concentration of termite activity or nesting can generate heat which the infra red camera can detect. Often thermal imaging will also reveal inactive termite nests because the mud packing will appear cooler than the surrounding wall. The weatherboard wall of the home above contained a complete colony of termites. Damage had been occurring in this home for many years and successive pest control companies had tried traditional treatment methods to keep the termites out. The entire colony was happily existing within the home completely. This type of infestation cannot occur unless a constant moisture source is available for the termites, in this case the moisture source was a leak in the bathroom which was only a metre from the colony.
